Beck

I’ve really been getting into the new Beck album, Sea Change. You can hear a preview on his site: beck.com

It’s a really cool, mellow album. More Mutations than Midnite Vultures (which I haven’t heard, but know the general vibe). It’s good to see Beck move away from the cut-and-paste and back into the solid, well-written song mode. And, thanks to Nigel Goodrich production, the new album’s got a warm, crisp vibe.

Beck is back.

Paul

Just got back from seeing Paul Westerberg. A couple of immediate thoughts:

  1. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
  2. It turned bad faster than I thought it would.
  3. Some of the people were as obnoxious as I figured they would be.
  4. It’s definitely weird to see a man in his 40s rock out on electric guitar by himself in front of a room of 800 people.
  5. A man playing a tour with no backing band and selling 800 tickets at $22.50 a pop probably makes a pretty decent living. But, the fact that he has to do this probably means he needs the money pretty bad because he didn’t seem to be particularly enjoying himself.
  6. “Skyway” is a good song.
  7. He completely butchered “Waitress in the Sky.”
  8. Paul played 2 Rolling Stones songs. As he started to play the second one of the evening, someone yelled out “hey, Keith!” and he abruptly stopped playing, knocked the mic stand over and proceeded to yell at the kid, completely stopping the show. He recovered, though, and invited the kid to join him on the couch (yes, couch) as he serenaded the kid and about 10 other people he invited onstage.
  9. He ended the show by smashing a perfectly good Stratocaster. I’ve never understood that.
  10. Did I mention I got in free? Yeah, that was cool.

Camper Van Beethoven Rocks On

I saw “Camper” at a reunion show at the 40 Watt in Athens, GA about a year ago and frankly it wasn’t that great. They played alot of Cracker songs and only played a sprinkling of CVB “hits”. Here’s hoping this new outing will be better. The good news is the awful (Cracker guitarist) Johnny Hickman will not be there (I hope).

Oh yeah, and this appearance is celebrating the Camper release (recorded back in their heyday) covering the Fleetwood Mac album, Tusk, in its entirety(!).

Finally some good news to start off my weekend.

Do you like the rock?

Last Saturday was easily the most fun I’ve ever had on stage. In case you haven’t been tuning in, I assembled a 12-piece band to play the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street album at a local club in Atlanta.

Everything worked out perfectly. The club sold out, the crowd was way appreciative and the band kicked ass. All in all it was an amazing time.

Now that I’m not crazy busy organizing this project anymore, I’ll have more time to devote to a much needed redesign of the muy. Around that time I hope to have some stills and video from the show. Stay tuned.
